  • 1/2 cup (112g) unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 1/2 cups (310g) sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup (240ml) buttermilk
  • 5 oz bittersweet chocolate (60% cacao), chopped
  • 2 1/4 cups (504g) unsalted butter
  • 8 cups (920g) powdered sugar
  • 1 cup (114g) natural unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 57 tbsp (75-105ml) water/cream
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • Black gel icing color
  • Red gel icing color
  • 4 oz red Wilton candy melts
  • 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream
  • Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat butter, oil, and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time and mix in vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually combine dry ingredients with buttermilk until just mixed.
  5. Divide batter; melt chocolate and fold into half for marbling.
  6. Alternate pouring batters into pans and use a knife to swirl them together.
  7. Bake for about 20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before frosting.
