  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup brewed coffee or hot water
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 2/3 cup Nutella
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 tbsp heavy cream
  • 3/4 cup Nutella for garnishing
  • 14 hazelnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a muffin tin with cupcake liners.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and brewed coffee or hot water.
  4. Combine the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients until just mixed; avoid overmixing.
  5. Fill each cupcake liner two-thirds full with batter and bake for about 18 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Allow cupcakes to cool before frosting with Nutella buttercream made by beating butter and Nutella until smooth, then gradually adding powdered sugar and cocoa.
  7. Garnish each cupcake with an additional dollop of Nutella and a hazelnut on top.
