  • 1 cup Dr. Pepper soda
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • ¼ cup cocoa powder
  • ½ cup boiling water
  • ½ cup buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs (room temperature)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1⅓ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoon ginger
  • ½ teaspoon all spice

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and spices with chopped prunes and cherries.
  3. Cream together unsalted butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add eggs one at a time, followed by buttermilk, boiling water, and Dr. Pepper; mix until well combined.
  5. Gradually incorporate dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for about 34 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  7. Allow to cool before frosting with Dr. Pepper-infused buttercream made from softened butter and confectioners' sugar.
