  • 1/2 cup (110 g) brown sugar
  • 3 eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup (240 ml) buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 9 tbsp (126 g) unsalted butter (for caramel sauce)
  • 3/4 cup (165 g) brown sugar (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream (for caramel sauce)
  • 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (for caramel sauce)
  • 1/4 tsp salt (for caramel sauce)
  • 8 oz (226 g) cream cheese, cold (for frosting)
  • 2 cups (260 g) powdered sugar (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing and flouring them.
  2. In a saucepan, melt unsalted butter over medium heat until golden brown; set aside to cool.
  3. Whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  4. In a stand mixer, beat cooled brown butter with granulated and brown sugars until fluffy.
  5. Add eggs one at a time followed by vanilla extract; mix until combined.
  6. Gradually incorporate buttermilk into the batter until just mixed.
  7. Gently fold dry ingredients into the wet mixture using a rubber spatula until no flour streaks remain.
  8. Divide batter between prepared pans; bake for 36 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool before removing from pans.
